Abcbb - Bed and Breakfast Rome B B center of Rome Vaticano Museum
The Vatican Museums are quite simply, the largest, richest, most compelling and perhaps most exhausting museum complex in the world. The Vatican Palace holds a collection of museums on very diverse subjects -displays of classical statuary, Renaissance painting, Etruscan relics Egyptian artefacts, not to mention the furnishing and decoration of the palace itself.
The small Museo Pio-Clementio and its octagonal courtyard is home to some of the best of the Vatican's classical statuary, including two statues that influenced Renaissance artists more than any others: the serene Apollo Belvedere and the first century b. c. Laocoon.
The nearby museo Egizio has some vividly painted mummy cases, along with canopi, the partial reconstruction of the Temple of Serapis and alabaster vesels. Museo Gregoriano Etrusco, holds sculpture , funerary art and applied art from the sites of southern Etruria. Further on , the niches of Gallery of Candelabra are adorned with huge candelabra taken from imperial Roman vilas. Beyond here the Gallery of Tapestries has on the left Belgian tapestries to designes by the school of Raffaello which show scenes from the life of Christ , and on the right tapestries made in Roma at the Barberini workshop during the 1600's.
Next the Gallery of Maps, which is as long as the previous two galleries put together, was decorated in the late sixteenth century at the behest of Pope Gregory XIII, the reformer of the calendar. Beyond you can see the Raffaello Stanze and the Borgia Apartaments. The Sistina Chapel, a huge barn like structure was built for Pope Sixtus IV between 1473 and1481.
The ceiling paintings here, and the Last Judgement on the wall behind the altar, together make up arguably the greatest masterpiece in Western art, and the largest body of painting ever planned and executed by one man - Michelangelo.
