Photo 1 Bed and Breakfast Rome Colosseum Colosseo Originally known as the Flavian Amphiteatre, it was begun around 72 a. d. by the Emperor Vespasiano, who was anxious to estinguish the memory of Nerone, and so chose the site of Nerone outrageos Domus Aurea for the stadium.

The Colosseo is sited on a lake wich was drained, and was inaugurated by Vespasiano son Tito, an event celebrated by 100 days of continuous games. Inside, there was room for a total of around 60000 people seated and 10000 or so standing: and the design is such that all could enter and be seated in a matter of minutes.

In the depths of what must have been the muddy bottom of the lake, a labyrinth was laid out, walling in passages for the contestants and storing scenery and other requirements for gladiatorial contests.

Inside the amphitheatre, the labyrinth below was covered over with a wooden floor. The Colosseum is perhaps Rome's most awe-inspiring ancient monument.
